Watery Wednesday and ABC Wednesday "P"

WATERY WEDNESDAY:
Just a drop today -

and a tiny little bug who may be contemplating going swimming : )

ABC WEDNESDAY - P IS FOR PAMPERED
People say I spoil my dogs.  Well, hello, was I supposed to rescue them and then treat them badly?  Here are a few shots of Jeffie - the poor baby : )

It's a shame he can't get comfortable, huh?

If you would like to view or join in on these two memes, please click on the appropriate button(s) to the right.  If you would like to adopt a wonderful slug like Jeffie, let me know.

Peace.  B : )

ABC Wednesday - J is for Joy of course!

Have you met our newest family member yet?

Above you will see several of the inventive but not effective bandages Mommy has come up with to keep Joy from messing with her incision.  The last one, the sticky tape one was good, till yesterday, when she chewed through it and now I can't get the incredibly sticky stuff off!  Today we go out for an E Collar.  As you can see, she's getting along well with CiCi, which is a miracle.  And let's not forget Jeffie.  Jeff has a toe that dislocates frequently - sometimes he gets better right away, sometimes he needs a bandage, sometimes he needs a bigger bandage, depending on how pitiful he's feeling.  They're both lying in the sun in the spot where the lizard cage used to be, sporting their bandages.  Quite the entertainers!

To join in on the ABC Wednesday fun, please click on the button with the same name, to the right.  Peace.  B : )

ABC Wednesday, Watery Wednesday, Seven Days - Seven Answers, and an announcement!

ABC WEDNESDAY - I IS FOR INTRICATE
This is an extremely INTRICATE gingerbread replica of the Ca d'Zan, made by the chefs at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Sarasota, Florida.  It was on display at Christmas time.

Here's a shot of the real thing

The intricacy of the details is just amazing - remember, this is gingerbread.  To read about the Ca d'Zan, please go here.

WATERY WEDNESDAY
Here is a shot of our local dog beach.  There is a small fenced park before that, then you walk to the beach.  It is quite small, but they just had a meeting last week about extending it to the south.  It is a VERY popular place.  None of my dogs care for the moving water, so it's not very popular with us - we prefer the really big dog park, with no beach.  But it's fun to go and look

SEVEN DAYS - SEVEN ANSWERS
Just found out my Romeo and Juliet story was a winner last week on this mind bending meme.  That was probably my consolation prize for my DUH moment : )  Anyway, here's today's challenge

All Irish
Now What?: Write what comes next.
Today is St. Patrick's Day!
How do you celebrate, if you do? Or if you don't, how would you respond if someone tries to pinch you for not wearing green?
And here is my answer:
Oh the angst of growing up an Orangeman!  I tried to ignore it and just wear some green and let it go, but I had trouble not being true to myself.  Well half of myself.  I know that half of me is Irish and I love it and I'm proud of it and I wanted to celebrate it.  But I'm not Catholic.  So I am, traditionally and historically, known as an Orangeman.  I think those two groups are still fighting wars over that aren't they?  Through the years, as I matured, I went through the many different phases we all experience.  Sometimes I was very belligerent - that's when I wore orange.  Sometimes I just gave in - and wore green.  Sometimes I was a sissy about it and said "Ooops, I forgot". And still other times, I just decided perhaps the other half of me was Irish too and Catholic, and wore the green : )  Here are some of my Irish ancestors who came over on "the boat" (not the baby or the one on the left, she's my grandmother)

Here's how I celebrate it now:  (a) I eat Ricepatty's Irish Soda Bread and (b) I plant my peas.  I was always told while growing up that St. Patty's Day was the day to get the peas in the ground.  Exciting, huh???

AND NOW FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT - WHICH NOW THAT I THINK OF IT, I COULD HAVE CALLED IT AN INTRODUCTION AND USED IT FOR ABC WEDNESDAY
TAKE A BOW, JOY
This is our new Greyhound girl, Joy.  She came to us Monday night.  She's wonderful!  She's so beautiful and part of her beauty is that she's not perfect - she has a short little Roman nose, an underbite like a bulldog, a big ginker in her tail, very long legs, the funniest little ears that can do oh so many things, a wonderful soft pretty coat, she's the first non-brindle Greyhound we've had, she's as sweet as can be, we love her already.  And the eyes - oh the eyes are just delightful.

To join in on any of the fun memes above, please click on the appropriate button to the right - and enjoy!  Happy St. Patrick's Day, whether you wear green, or orange, or your birthday suit - doesn't matter, just celebrate life.  And don't forget to get those peas in the ground.  Peace.  B : )

ABC Wednesday - C is for CiCi of Course!

There are many Cs in my life, one big one being Color, but the biggest bestest C for me is the little girl I call Ci.  It's CiCi, our youngest, most recent adoptee.  Here she is the day her foster mom brought her to PetSmart up in Sarasota so she could begin her life with us:
This is so NOT Ci!  She is NOT a girly girl.  This is her later in life, same car, Ricky's car seat, the REAL Ci:
OMG am I a sucker for a shaggy dog!  Here are some more:
Christmas, in front of the tree:
Who me?
Out in the Craft Room with me:
Close up:
Rolling in the frost-bitten grass.  She loves to scratch her back!
That's my girl.  Sorry if you got bored : )  Hope you have a great C in your life.  If you'd like to see others, please click on the ABC Wednesday button to your right.  Peace.  B : )

This Way ThursWay - A sign of the times

This is a real sign of the times.  I originally took this picture for the meme called Watery Wednesday, but when I read what it said on the window I realized you see this sign everywhere these days - empty stores for lease.

Another sign of the times, a much happier one, is that people are taking much better care of their pets nowadays.  You rarely see a dog chained up in a yard anymore.  People spend billions of dollars on their pets every year.  Due to this new respect for animals, and because of the poker craze, more Greyhound race tracks have closed their doors this past year.  The numbers are dwindling and this is a wonderful thing!  What's not so wonderful for the dogs is that thousands of them no longer have homes, such as they were.  Good news for you - they're up for adoption.  If you want to know more about these wonderful pets you can e-mail me at bleemcguire@gmail.com.  Thanks.  Hope your signs of the times are good ones.  Peace.  B : )  Oh, and if you want to play along, please click on the button to the right.  Thanks.

ABC Wednesday - Y is for YIKES!!

Please click on the alphabet button to the right to join in.

Jeffie says "Yikes, I'm so happy I'm doing the happy dance, but also sad, that's why I'm doing it on my back!"

Jeffie's very talkative isn't he.  He says he would like you to read this article we saw yesterday, but if you don't want to take that much time what it says is that more Greyhound race tracks closed their doors for good (very good) but now there is an even larger surplus of retired Greyhounds who need homes (not so good).  Hint hint.  They're wonderful pets and they don't eat much, don't take up much room, don't need exercise, do love you.  Jeffie was under the covers this morning it's so cold here in Florida - he was loving it.  Please, please consider Greyhound adoption.  If you want more information on what they're like, just e-mail me at bleemcguire@gmail.com.  BTW, if you have small animals, you can get "cat-tested" Greyhounds.  We had a rabbit when we got our first two and he had free run of the screen porch which the dogs had to go through to get to the backyard.

KENOSHA, Wis. - Seven dog tracks halted racing across the country last year, forcing hundreds of greyhounds into an uncertain future. With fewer tracks available for them to race, the sleek long-limbed dogs are now flooding the adoption market at a difficult time.

Economic hardships are preventing many dog lovers from adopting, or worse, forcing them to give back animals they can no longer afford to keep. Misconceptions about the breed — that greyhounds are hyperactive and crave constant stimulation and exercise — also scare away some potential owners, advocates say.

And most have spent their lives inside racetracks and kennels with little exposure to families, kids or even the most basic household activities, say greyhound lovers like Rhonda Mack, who took in two dogs from the Dairyland Greyhound Park in southern Wisconsin, which closed last week.

"You bring a dog home … They've never been outside the racetrack," said the 50-year-old from Lake Zurich, Ill., who now has three greyhounds, including new additions Lexi and Jack. "They go into your house — they don't know what a window is, they don't know what stairs are. They walk right into windows like they aren't even there."

The track in Wisconsin ran its last dog race on New Year's Eve; another in Phoenix and one in Massachusetts also ended dog racing last month, bringing the total to seven tracks that pulled the mechanical rabbit in 2009.

There are no precise figures, however greyhound advocates estimate more than 1,000 greyhounds now need new homes. That's in addition to the best racers, who will be sent to tracks that remain open elsewhere or to breeders.

Since greyhound racing began decades ago, there's always been an issue of what to do with retired race dogs. Previously they largely found homes through a fragmented network of breed adoption and other placement groups, but the recent deluge of dogs in need of dwellings has magnified the issue.

"It is a domino effect," said Michael McCann, president of The Greyhound Project Inc., a Boston-based nonprofit that provides support and information about greyhound adoptions. "Everything that happens in one state affects … the dog adoption effort in other states."

It doesn't help that the economic downturn has made some people hesitant to become dog owners and pushed others to give up their pets because of the costs of caring for them. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that as many as 2 million pets have been abandoned since the recession began in December 2007.

Modern day greyhound racing started in 1919 in California and at its height in the 1990s, more than 50 tracks operated nationwide. The number of tracks offering races has steadily decreased in the past decade, from 46 in 15 states in 2001 to 30 at the start of 2009. This year, no more than 23 tracks in eight states will operate dog races.

Year-round racing in some states has pushed seasonal tracks out of business or track owners aren't able to afford the high taxes, said Tim Horan of the National Greyhound Association, which represents greyhound owners. Competition from other sporting events and gambling hasn't helped, he said.

In Massachusetts, two tracks ended racing last year after voters approved a ballot question sponsored by the group Grey2K, which claimed widespread mistreatment of greyhounds, including confining them in small cages in warehouse-style kennels.

The racing industry nationwide vigorously defends its record on the treatment of dogs during and after their racing careers.

With so many dogs needing homes, Kevin Neuman of Overland Park, Kan., started the nonprofit greyhoundcentral.org, which he hopes will serve as a clearinghouse for greyhound adoption.

The aim is to connect available dogs to owners, as well as people willing to transport animals from kennels in one state to new homes in another, said Neuman, who has adopted 11 greyhounds over the past 16 years.

When Woodlands Greyhound Park in Kansas City closed in 2008, Neuman said his group found homes for some 500 dogs, including about 200 placed in adoptive homes in the area.

He worries the outcome won't be as positive for these canines.

"There are many ways for these dogs to disappear, to go to tracks that might be outside the country, in Mexico for example," where the dogs might be run harder and get less adequate care, he said.

Still, there are some safeguards.

Wisconsin state law requires that all greyhounds be adopted, sent to another racetrack or returned to their owners.

The Massachusetts Racing Commission requires that no greyhound be euthanized unless all "reasonable efforts" to place the dog for adoption have been exhausted. Owners must provide the commission with a detailed explanation as to why a dog was put down rather than adopted.

And in New Hampshire, where two tracks ended racing, only greyhounds that sustain severe injuries while racing can be euthanized.

In Wisconsin, the Dairyland track has offered a $5,000 incentive to its kennels to find all dogs homes by Feb. 5. General Manager Bill Apgar said even if that deadline is not met, the kennel compound will remain open until all are placed.

On a recent visit to the track's kennel, there were some positive signs. Almost all the dogs' cages had "adopted" signs on them. The message on the scoreboard read: "Retired greyhounds make great pets. Visit our 1st floor adoption office to find out more!"

"We are just besieged with adoption requests," Apgar said.

Greyhound lovers are constantly trying to clear up misconceptions about the breed. Despite their athletic training and competitive instincts, the dogs are calm, easy to care for and do not require constant exercise as might be assumed, they say.

"If you want a dog to go play Frisbee with, this isn't it," said Kari Morrison Young, director of Arizona Adopt-A-Greyhound.

Lynn Rapa of Methuen, Mass., has adopted six former racing dogs.

As "sight hounds," they are bred to chase a lure, so that chase instinct could be a problem in homes with cats or other small pets, she said. Rapa recommends that greyhounds be kept in a fenced backyard or on a leash.

Dogs who have spent their lives in track settings also benefit from transitional foster homes, where they can learn how to do things like go up and down stairs and become acclimated to unfamiliar household noises such as microwaves or vacuum cleaners, she said.

Mack, who adopted the dogs from the Kenosha track, agrees.

"I had a huge dog that came home … Two minutes it took him to figure out the stairs, but his back legs, he hopped like a bunny. It was this gigantic dog hopping like a bunny down the stairs," she said, laughing.

Greyhounds walk great on a leash, sleep 22 hours a day and are "couch potatoes," she added. "They are very, very laid-back dogs."

Camera Critters - Lazy Lounge Lizard

Here are a couple of pics of Bobber, the big boy lizard (green iguana), who was adopted.

Being a lounge lizard - looks like he's elbowed up to the bar doesn't it?

And just to show you the difference, this is Zimmie.  My youngest step daughter and I bought her for Dad at a pet shop when she was just a few inches long - you've seen them.  That same day we adopted a guinea pig named Harry.  He didn't last as long as Zimmie.  See the difference in color?  that's because Zimmie has been fed right all these years, and Bobber wasn't.  The little white patch on her is a scar from an injury.  Oh BTW, Zimmie is a bastardization of Bob Dylan's real name : )

Have a happy day and be kind to all critters, no matter how many legs they have.  Peace.  B : )

Click on the Camera Citters button on the right to go see more critters, and perhaps showcase one of yours.

It's Time for Camera Critters Again - Yippee!!

Go to http://hootin--anni.blogspot.com/ to participate.

When we had a house full of Greyhounds (three) my DH's sister came to stay with us for a while with two very small mini rat terriers.  We never liked small dogs, but got kind of used to them.  When she left, we agreed we should get a small dog.  I found Ricky (who was Skippy then) and called DH and asked "how small does he have to be?"  Ricky was much smaller than the Greyts, but much larger than the rat terriers, but darn he was cute.  He has since come to be known as The Cutest Dog in The Whole Wide World.  Since he came into a Greyt house, he learned to be like them.  You will see pix some day of him stretched out on his back like they do.  He got to be a bit larger too (by 10 pounds I'm ashamed to say) some from Dad showing love by treats and some from those horrible meds for his allergies.  Anyway, in the interim, we lost two of the Greyts, first Josie, then our first one, Fred - won't talk about that now.  I went to see more Greyts and it was too early for that, so I found another terrier on the internet, through Canine Castaways.  I loved her look and her story, she sounded like she'd fit right in.  She's a terror.  The animal behaviorist said she's a bitch (well, yeah, scientifically, but personality-wise too) however, CiCi and I get along wonderfully.  The AB says she doesn't love me, she just thinks she owns me.  She's right too.  So, after all that, here are Ricky and his little "mini me", CiCi, waiting for yet another meal:

If you have any questions about pet adoption, animal behaviorists, Greyhounds, terriers in general, or anything really, just put them in the comments and I will answer.  Thanks for looking.  Have a happy day.  Peace.  B : )  Oops, forgot part of the story - Ricky is now being more like a terrier and Jeff is left alone as our only Greyt - ahhh but for how long???

Ruby Tuesday

This is Jeff, the Greyhound.  He has such a problem relaxing doesn't he?  When we first got Ricky, the larger of the furry terriers, he came into a home occupied by three Greyhounds and he quickly learned to be just like them, quiet, lounging around, laid back.  Then within seven heartbreaking months, we lost Josie and Fred.  It was just too soon to adopt another Greyhound; my heart couldn't take it.  So we got CiCi, the princess, the total terrier.  Now Ricky is leaning more toward being a terrier than a Greyhound.  I'm thinking we'll need another Greyhound to love soon!

Mary, over at http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com/ hosts Ruby Tuesday.  She is also having the Great Ruby Tuesday Giveaway.  Check it out and show her some love.  Her own entry is nothing short of brillilant!

Have a happy day, and, please, keep a spot in your heart for the folks who aren't.  Peace.  B : )
